Tiny Moments That Build Trust

The other day, I offered two options to one of my 12‑year‑old students. He looked at me, smiled, and said, “cher, you already know what I’d choose. Why do you ask?”

It was such a simple line. Playful, light, almost throwaway. But it stayed with me long after that day. In that moment, I felt the quiet warmth of a relationship that has been built slowly, gently, through many ordinary days. His smile told me something important: he feels safe here. Safe enough to tease, safe enough to trust, safe enough to believe that this space holds him.

We often talk about trust as if it’s created through big, intentional gestures. But in reality, trust grows in the tiny, almost invisible moments that accumulate over time. It grows in:

  • the way we greet each other (sometimes, it has some element of 'special' meaning 😛)

  • the tone we use when someone makes a mistake (we'd first pause and process within us, before going into a conversation instead of jumping straight in)

  • the consistency of our routines (children are wired to follow routines well because this gives them a sense of security and control)

  • the shared jokes that only make sense in our little community (secrets..!!!!)

  • the pauses where we choose patience instead of pressure

These micro‑interactions are the threads that weave belonging. They tell a child: You matter here. You are known here. You don’t have to perform to be accepted. When students feel emotionally safe, something changes or shifts. They take more risks. They ask more questions. They let their real selves peek through. We offer them a space to be 'imperfect' and be curious, it is akin to giving them permission to make mistakes and learn, while knowing we are there to catch them if they fall.

That small moment with my student reminded me that connection isn’t built through grand speeches or elaborate plans. It’s built through presence. Through noticing. Through the gentle, steady ways we show up for young people day after day.

And sometimes, it’s built through a smile and a simple line like, “cher, you already know what I’d choose.”

Such a tiny moment but big meaning underlying it 💖
